Commodore OS Vision tmp.X11-unix suspicious mode
Hey,
I have been having trouble with getting the GNOME 2.32 to start after installation on the Commodore OS Vision. The problem is when i boot, the OS doesn't go into the GUI it goes into console. So i login in, in console and type "startx" but this error occurs:
/tmp.X11-unix has suspicious mode (not 1777) or is not a directory, aborting. giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
I have read these forums:
[ubuntu] stuck at login - after changing login screen - Ubuntu Forums
Starting in Terminal Mode
Both of which relate to my problem exactly, and gone through the steps, but the error still exists.
I know the OS is compatible with my comp, because i can run the live CD without any issues.
It should also be noted that the OS was perfectly fine in a virtual machine on the same computer, but not on the physical machine!
The set-up is exactly the same, filsystem type & partitioning. The only difference is Windows is in the first partition.
Also I've realized that the livecd will only boot up properly under the VESA graphics (Safe graphics mode) not the normal. If i use the normal mode on the liveCD, it has the same problem!
I'm really at a loss?? :SLast edited by SL6-A1000; 11-17-2011 at 11:06 AM.

Can someone please help!
I'm at a real loss.
I've tried doing this as suggested in a similar topic:
sudo rm -rf /tmp/.X11-unix
sudo mkdir /tmp/.X11-unix
chown root:root /tmp/.X11-unix
chmod 1777 /tmp/.X11-unix
sudo etc/init.d/gdm restart
startx
This doesn't do anything, the problem remains the same.
I've also tried this from the commodore-amiga forums
sudo rm -rf /tmp/.X11-unix
startx
but that results in the following message:
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module does not exist, 0)
(II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported
(EE) RADEON(0): Chipset: "AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series" (ChipID=0x6739) requires KMS
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usuable configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
ddxSigGiveUp: closing log
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
This then led me to install the "FGLRX" module which after installed and a system reboot; the system just loads all the way until its about to either enter terminal or the GUI, where it becomes a black screen and then restarts after about 30 seconds (after monitors have turned off). Unless i enter single-user mode, which often results in me removing the "FGLRX" module and i'm back where i started again...
I have tried reinstalling GDM and xorg with the FGLRX module and without it. I have also tried doing
X --configure in both situations before and after reinstalling gdm and xorg.
BOTH result in either of the 2 messages posted above.
As you can see i've gone around in circles.
AND this is after the fact that i have probably re-installed the OS 5 times under different configurations each time.
Help would be great!
