Wireless on new install not working

I'm a complete beginner here....so might need step by step instructions.

Works great on ethernet cable (like now)
doesn't seem to see wireless networks at all, my limited experience allows me to find this information. Read a few comments on installing firmware-b43-installer? but have no idea how to do this.

    Also found ref to compat-wireless-3.6-rc5-1

Dowloaded this and unzipped into a file I named src, but readme instructions haven't really told me how I actually instal it? so details from terminal below, hope some one can help who is good with newcommers.

This machine runs I'll have to fire up the other machine probably tomorrow to see what that sais, thanks for any help, it seems from discussions that that several people have suffered poor wireless with Ubuntu/Linux, Interesting that the Mint version on the other machine doesn't work at all (yet)

    Fixed!!!

Found this on ubuntu thread and in desperation tried it...it worked so one machine is going great, might just load Ubuntu 12.04 to the other one rather than trying Mint.

    Code:
    sudo -s

    echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
I'd still like to know why?
Now how do I mark thread as fixed?
