Totally ruined my system by trying to update cinnamon 1.6 please help?

Okay so here's what I did... I tried to update to 1.6 then when I loaded mint it just showed my background image and nothing else, so I deleted cinnamon and tried reinstalling 1.4 and then I got a desktop but all there was were icons and my dock at the bottom. Then I tried to install unity figuring that I didn't know how to fix this problem and if I just had another decent desktop It wouldn't matter to me even though I really liked cinnamon, and I could just try to figure out how to fix it in the meantime. Well I don't really know what that did to my damn computer and now it seems to have all kinda problems. Please help mee...? I'm gonna post the history.log when I get back on.

ok sources.list is what tells your system where to go to get the updated it needs. you can look at your source list by going to your terminal and typing
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list enter in your password and then you will see your sources. I would show you mine since we are using the same system but i cant post URLs yet on this site i have to post 15 post. but a list of your sources should be on linux mint site and go campare them to what you have verses what they have and change it accordingly. after your done editing it press ctrl x it will ask do you want to save changes press y the press enter. hop this helps!
