Cinnamon problems - background and panel

Hi all, new to the forum here. I am having some issues with Cinnamon. I'm not sure what I did, but I can't see the background of my desktop - it just appears black. I can select a background and I see it in the preview pane, but the actual background of the desktop never changes. I've also noticed that it isn't saving apps that I add to my panel - if I reboot or log out it goes back to the default.

I have tried uninstalling cinnamon (sudo apt-get remove --purge cinnamon) and reinstalling it, and I've also tried deleting the .cinnamon directory in my home directory.

    Anyone have any suggestions?
