How to find when you installed something?

Right now I have Eclipse in my programs list but I don't remember installing it and am not sure if it came with this distro(Mint 14 Cinnamon).

And generally on all Linux distros, what is the standard way to know when you installed something and/or on what day you installed that particular distro?

rpm, yum, aptitude. One of these commands should provide means to get details on whats installed, and at least for rpm I know you can do --changelog and get a date, so I am sure aptitude has a flag for that too.
