    usb crashes with 3g dongle

When I plug in a dongle or a phone to the USB, after 10 or 20 mins it crashes. With the phone I get another go, and with the dongle I do not. So I have to re-start the computer. Also with the dongle plugged straight into the usb, if I move the laptop, it stops working. However, sometimes I can wiggle the connection into the usb and it doesn't stop working, and when I am transfering photos from the phone, it may disconnect electronically, but I can connect it very easily again.

I have to think this is a hardware problem. Probably a bad connector or port/controller. Contact the computer manufacturer's support staff to help diagnose if this is a hardware problem or not. If so, then get it fixed.

Rubberman is right. You have a bungus port or flaky 5V regulator on the mobo somewhere. That sucks.

I am really doubtful that it is hardware for a number of reasons including that the printer works fine. The USB worked and dongle on Windows, and was problimatic straight away with Linux. there are other reasons too. I do not understand what 5v reg is, or what the symptoms are.

I know you posted all those awesome dmesg dumps and everything, but nobody is any closer to solving your problem.

Why don't you email your PC to the LinuxForums Repair Shop so it can be analyzed properly?

BTW, what exactly is a 'dongle' in your part of the world? And what kind of 'phone' plugs into USB? Headphone, telephone, anglophone, mcrophone, earphone, xylophone, vibraphone?

What you need is a nice guy like elijah who shows up and fixes it. Only charges beer And dinner of course.

    Hi.
dont know what you mean about email PC to Repair shop: can someone explain?
dongle is like a memory stick, which pics up mobile broadband from teh mobile phone networks. Phone is mobile phone, which tethers to the laptop USB to provide mobile broadband.

Have no idea what you are talking about with your last line and wondering if yo uare being weird??

I think it was Miven's attempt at sarcastic humor!
I still think it is either a bad dongle or connector/cable. You say wiggling it sometimes helps? That would tend to support that theory. Anyway, I think Miven's point is that it is pretty hard to do more than guess if you cannot have the hardware in hand to check out.

No, wiggling doesn't help! I have used 3 different dongles in it, and the dongles work fine in other laptops so definitely not dongle.

I know it is not the hardware, so I think I would only be interested in answers that start with that assumption.

    thanks

    OK. This is fun.

Yet another story from the archives of my mind.

Way back in the days when cars didn't come with nice stereos and alarm systems, I fixed those things.

So, one Tuesday, this chick shows up with her car and says her brake lights don't work.

"I just put these new floormats in, and now my brake lights don't work!"

Well, it's possible, so I pull out her nice new floormats and check things out. Nothing wrong there, so I move on to the trunk. She has a crap load of stuff in her trunk. I start pulling it out and she objects.

"Why are you looking in the trunk?!?" She tries to stop me.

"I need to look at your brake lights."

She reluctantly helps me get enough crap out of the trunk so I can check out the brake lights. Sure enough, there's a broken wire on the left harness and a couple dead bulbs. I fix the broken wire, and replace the dead bulbs. I charge her $20. It only took 15 minutes.

Just before she drives away, she says, "I still don't understand how my new floormats broke my brakelights."

Yeah. $2 for the parts, and $18 for the fixin. I was a mechanic for years and my first auto repair guru and I were looking at some guy with a front brake problem - stuck caliper I think. He gets out a hammer and gives it a whack - fixed! Charges the guy $25 who then complains about "It only took two minutes to fix! Why $25?" to which he answered "Well, $5 is for the tappin', and $20 is for knowing where to tap!".
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
Just remember, Semper Gumbi - always be flexible!
