mint won't boot after installing a second hard drive

I've been using Mint 18 XFCE without any issues. One day I decided to connect an old hard drive to use as auxillary storage, but now when I try to startup the computer, I get a command prompt with the error messages seen below:
I tried removing the 2nd hard drive, but still the same. I didn't do anything to the OS and I have no idea what caused this or how to fix it. any help would be greatly appreciated

Looks like a hard drive failure. Try another SATA cable if you have one.

looks to me like inserting the second drive made it sda, which then got grub confused? maybe switch the plugs for drives?
