Is mint broken or am i a bit thick

I have a directory in my home folder called projects
    Code:
    dr-xrwxr-x 15 phil phil 4096 Jul 10 17:46 projects
for some reason i can't do either of
    Code:
     touch ~/projects/temp
    or
    Code:
     mkdir ~/projects/temp

i thought the w in the group section of would allow this. i am in group phil and logged on as user phil

You say "can't do", is there an error?

Try changing permissions to rwx as in "chmod +rwx projects". Your "root" permissions does not include the read (+r) permission. This will cause such a problem.

Trickier than you think. What does the output of "ls -l projects" show you for the permissions on the projects directory directly.

The first field for the owner (you) omits the write permission flag. Do this: chmod u=+rwx projects

I it is just a bit of overkill. You could also do this: chmod u=+w projects
