Sorry, but the zip file doesn't want to be displayed on my computer (also Linux Mint). Please post it directly.

196kb of compressed plain text? that's going to be a helluva lot of text to look through...

doesn't linux mint use their own software manager? maybe you should ask them forums.linuxmint.com

Mint is an Ubuntu clone so it uses Aptitude and Synaptic to manage software.

    but you shouldn't use it.

mint uses its own updater, evaluating all available updates into 5 groups, marked green-yellow-orange-red.
running a full upgrade is equivalent to installing everything from all 5 groups.

of course, if you know what you're doing, you would
    - run an update from command line
    - open mint's updater to perform proper, mint-conform upgrades
    - and then use some software center that is maybe mint-specific and maybe not.

    complicated. confusing.

and unsurprisingly, a lot can go wrong in this process, esp. when people with half-knowledge give advice.

    PS:
greg123: i cannot see the attachments. attachments do not work for me on this forum.
please either show us some code or use a pastebin.

pastebin = any number of external sites that allow you to paste large text, e.g. https://paste.debian.net/

Try the following and post the output.
    Code:
    sudo mintinstall
    sudo synaptic
Hopefully launching these gui's from a terminal will yeild good diagnostic messages
