mint 13 maya boot failure

just installed mint 13 maya on my gateway ml3108 laptop, after install it rebooted and failed to get to log in screen.
error message as follows;

xauth: file/home/john/.Xauthority does not exist

any help appreciated

Not sure, but I think this problem arises from installing Mint while not having an internet connection.

set internet up during install, where it checks laptop plugged into mains and connected to internet

Have you tried re-installing Mint?
