I need a distro recommendation

I'm looking for a distro that focuses on multimedia and is somewhat lightweight. It doesnt need to have games, word processing, or any kind of graphics editor. Any ideas?

You can go for minimal install of Slackware. Linux Mint supports most of media formats out of box.
If you want to use LiveCD then Slax is the best option.

I use Ubuntu and Xubuntu. For my other machine I kinda want of get away from the *buntus. Its not that I dont like them, I just want something different for them. Ive heard good things about Linux Mint. I think I'll try that, if it doesnt work for me I'll try Puppy because I hear very good things about it.

I'm kinda' new to Linux myself, but I've been testing light-weight distributions, and found that Puppy Linux, Knoppix, and Wolvix all work pretty well. They were able to open PDFs, play mp3s, avi, mpeg, and even divx.

They were also all made to run off live medium such as a live CD, DVD, or USB so it will be easy to try them out. If you have enough RAM, they can all be run directly from RAM without needing a HD install.

In general though, I think Mplayer plays most multimedia so either look for a distribution with that program, or get a lightweight distro and add the program. As a general rule, anything not running Gnome or KDE should be fairly lightweight and run well on older hardware.

If you need a lightweight distro for multimedia, try Puppy, Knoppix, or Wolvix (listed in order from lightest to heaviest). If your hardware's good enough to go with something much heavier, you may want to start looking into Linux Mint, an Ubuntu-based desktop.

Well, Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu so if you want to get away from the *buntus, you'll have to go somewhere else.

Puppy is nice but I don't think it has a reputation as a Multimedia distro.

The truth is, any distro can be built into a multimedia distro. Just find one that you're comfortable using and add to it what you need that it lacks.
