| I'm kinda' new to Linux myself, but I've been testing light-weight distributions, and found that Puppy Linux, Knoppix, and Wolvix all work pretty well. They were able to open PDFs, play mp3s, avi, mpeg, and even divx.
They were also all made to run off live medium such as a live CD, DVD, or USB so it will be easy to try them out. If you have enough RAM, they can all be run directly from RAM without needing a HD install.
In general though, I think Mplayer plays most multimedia so either look for a distribution with that program, or get a lightweight distro and add the program. As a general rule, anything not running Gnome or KDE should be fairly lightweight and run well on older hardware.
If you need a lightweight distro for multimedia, try Puppy, Knoppix, or Wolvix (listed in order from lightest to heaviest). If your hardware's good enough to go with something much heavier, you may want to start looking into Linux Mint, an Ubuntu-based desktop. |
