Question How to set up my server as an IM proxy?

I'd like to set up my server as a proxy for Instant Messenger clients. I know there are companies out there that do this, but I figured somebody smart may have an open source solution out there.

Have you taken a look at squid or even safesquid which has a nice gui.
There is a tutorial here on how to install safesquid and a few more tutorials on how to do black lists etc..

You might as well be interested in bitlbee.

BitlBee - Home

It's an irc to IM gateway that support multiple IM protocols, which means that you could just connect to the bitlbee server by just using a regular chat client, and also means that you don't need a separate client for each IM.

You can as well use it as a proxy.

The downside is that most likely, the most exotic features will not be available.
