A good place to start is Linux from Scratch and learn about how it is done and what needs to be done, then work your way from there.

LFS is great, i have used it, if you are a bit confused about the whole process are don't wanna compile everything yourself, use Automated linux from scratch and it will get you a usable system you can add anything you want to.

Not to discourage enthusiastic new users, I can't understand why anyone who is not already intimately familiar with Linux would want to make a new distro when there are so many great choices already? Literally 101 distros in this listing and I'm sure it's not comprehensive.

It teaches you alot about linux which you just don't know. I found it an excellent learning tool. It explains everything you might wanna know about all the packages needed to run a system
