I have a.........

128mb
8gb
166mhz cpu and windows 98 SE

can someone recommened a good alternative to "Windows Media Player"?

You could try Real Player or musicmatch

For .mp3's, Zinf is excellent (Zinf Is Not Freeamp) , for movies, try ACE movie player. Also, you could try to find older versions of media player...
