since I restarted the linux box that was running up2date, after accidentally switching the power off, I have realised that the up2date has set itself going again - presumably to finish off its interrupted operations - this time so far it does not lock up the machine too much as I am not logged into x windows - so I guess I should let it carry on for now - I can access logs etc for admin in terminal mode, though the machine is slow with the up2date ripping on - and also the web site is still loadable slowly from remote machines.

Michael.
