I'd love to try these, but for some reason I can't edit XF86Config. I opened it in Text Editor and tried to change it, but it just doesn't do anything. The letters I type don't even appear on the screen. Even if I could, it's not letting me save the file. I'm probably doing some obvious thing wrong, but what is it?

I tried putting in "IMPS/2" but that didn't make it work, so I followed the link that abacad posted, and I'm stuck halfway through it. It says:


Next you need to tell xmodmap which buttons are the wheel movements with the following,

xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5"

I did everything above that, but I have no idea what it's talking about there. I did a search on "xmodmap" and came back with some files, but I'm not sure which one or how to edit it.

Open a terminal, type xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5" and press Enter.

Ugh, this is getting irritating. I tried that and it won't recognize the command. Do I need to cd to a certain directory first?

xmodmap is an xfree86 component, it should be in /usr/X11R6/bin/. Do "locate xmodmap" to see if it's installed.

I used "cd" to get to that directory, and once there I tried the command again. This time instead of giving an error message it just didn't say anything at all. Perhaps I need to reboot for it to work, but it doesn't seem like anything happened. I have to leave for the weekend to go to my dad's house, so I'll be away from this board. :\

It's not supposed to say anything. xmodmap, like many other commands, doesn't give any acknowledgements that it has succeeded; just error messages when it has not. So, that means that you succeeded.

I'm back from my dad's house, and discovered that xmodmap didn't do anything. I'm now going to try and use IMWheel.
