    recomendations for an older portable

i have an older think pad that i want to install linux on
previously it was running on windows 2000, and the disc space is 20G
    so i need something light

i only need the computer for checking email, editing my site, doing a little gimp work and generall Audio/Video use,
if possible i would also like to run a sound editing system such as Sound Forge or Audacity.
and also if possible a video editing program, but i'm not holding my breath

i have never installed any linux software before and would like to have some suggestions for which one is the best for me

    a friend recommended Linux Puppy
