You might want to settle on a language first. What kind of programming would you like to do? There are many different languages to choose from, all with their own strengths and weaknesses.

Did you say you wanted to learn the programming language called Basic or you are just interested in any programming language? If you are interested in any language, you could try Python. Its quite simple to get started (most distros include it by default) and there are lots of newbie guides available on the web.
