Why are trying to compile ATM drivers? I assume that you don't have an ATM network, right?

thats what i was thinking. i uncheck all the funny networking options and saved it in xconfig, that just what make modules gave me. i think something funny is going on.

but why is my kernel even a problem? i know redhat kerenls have sound enabled(along with a million other things).

Try downloading the official kernel sources from kernel.org and try them instead of RedHat's kernel source.
