CPU & case fans never spin with Linux or BSD
I have tried alot of distros Ubuntu and redhat based the fans stop as soon as i pick linux from the boot screen.It happen on every computer I ever had,my desktops emachens,Ibm net vista,dell,and laptops dell latitude,and compaq armoda.on my destop I had to wiere the fans diretly to the power cabel to on of the drives.But really like to have linux on my laptop.thank you all.

try appending "acpi=force apm=force" to the kernel section on your /boot/grub/menu.lst file
Maybe they don't need to be on for some reason!
