Well, you know, you don't have to pay to download updates from RedHat. The only thing you'll have to pay for is prioritized access to their up2date servers....

I like Gentoo alot. You can cut out alot of the extras that are included in other distros that bog down your system. It took a little time to get running, but it was well worth the work.

Personally I like Mandrake, it's what I've used since version 8.0, I don't mind the "bloated startup"(Seems fast enough for me), and I rarely use the GUI tools.
But of course, the good thing with Linux is the distrobutions. You know, "Different strokes for different folks"
