IRC ---- tcp/ip confusion
When i do a ifconfig i get the following :Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:70
6:07
E
inet addr:192.168.101.58 Bcast:192.168.101.255 Mask:255.255.255.0"
ip 192.168.101.58 which seem to be correct.
When i connect to irc however (mystery.lagnet.org.za) it show that my ip is 196.185.14.54 reading from the whois in xchat.
What ip is it showing there? when i used windoze it showed the same ip in irc as when i did a ipconfig.
Please assist to clear the confusion.
Thank you very much for all the time.

I recently learned that the IP shown in IRC is the IP of the server, as I had that same question.

When i ping that server i get :
ping mystery.lagnet.org.za
PING mystery.lagnet.org.za (196.44.1.12) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from chat.ananzi.co.za (196.44.1.12): icmp_seq=1 ttl=243 time=1289 ms
64 bytes from chat.ananzi.co.za (196.44.1.12): icmp_seq=2 ttl=243 time=1321 ms
64 bytes from chat.ananzi.co.za (196.44.1.12): icmp_seq=3 ttl=243 time=982 ms
64 bytes from chat.ananzi.co.za (196.44.1.12): icmp_seq=4 ttl=243 time=1089 ms
mmm - we are getting somewhere -- This server is in the 196.44.x.x range, and the ip that i see in irc is a ip allocated in that range? The ip that is see for myself on irc being 196.44.185.54.
But on the other hand there is ppl in the chat room on the same server showing a complete different ip?? like 1654.165.63.234
How does that work then -

The IP that shows up in a whois is the IP of where you are connected from. Mine is the IP of my router, not my computer (as it's in a private LAN). If you use our CGI IRC client, it will show you the IP of the server on which the client is hosted.
