    NIS Trouble...

I am having trouble with my NIS server...I just set it up, but when I try to log on from a different machine, I get a $HOME not writeable error. I made sure that I had the proper permissions set on the /home directories, but still no luck...

I am fairly new to NIS, so please bear with me...

One again, I use SuSE 8.2 Pro, and run KDE 3.1

    thanks,

NIS? Don't you mean NFS? I don't really see how NIS could be related to /home permissions.

No I am using NIS, although something might be happening with my NFS, I never thought of that...

Anyway, here is the exact error I get as soon as I try to logon:

"The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE:
No write access to $HOME directory (/)

    KDE is unable to start"

Is that a local thing maybe...It looks like it is trying to create me a home directory on the local machine, but why wouldnt it just do it...??

I will try to create me a local /home/ehazlett directory and see what happens....

    thanks dolda

After thinking a little harder, I figured it out...
I logged in as root and set the permissions on the /home directory to a NIS group I created called "admins". I set the permissions to allow group write to the /home directory

    thanks for your help
