I can see sftp while running command "whereis sftp" and sshd is also running
Does this mean - it's supported -right?

    You pretty much already did

    If ssh login works, but
    Code:
    sftp Lakshmipathi@remote.server.somewhere
    comes back with
subsystem request failed on channel 0
Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer
then the sftp subsystem is most likely not configured or down on purpose.

    perfect I got this
subsystem request failed on channel 0
Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer
So I need to sftp in remote machine ..that should work -- right?

Edit: How to start sftp services on remote server. ?

sshfs should work on your side , once sftp on the remote server has been established.

On a opensshd server, it is usually enough to have this line
    Subsystem sftp /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server
    in sshd_config
    and restart sshd.

Question is: Does the remote admin want to enable sftp?

    Note:
There are some ssh servers (like dropbear) that simply do not have sftp.

Strange that line is already there in sshd_config file.
any else i need to verify in remote machine?
Question is: Does the remote admin want to enable sftp?
Answer is: Yes , he needs to enable it , since I'm the remote root

    ok, so troubleshooting time.

    Is sftp-server there?
    which path?
    executeable?

What do the logs tell you? etc, etc, you know the drill

    Now it worked

    # sshfs lakshmipathi@dev.xxx.com:/home/lakshmipathi /mnt/memfs/
thanks a lot for your help.
    So here is the steps
    1) Make sure sftp is running in remote machine.
2)Create password less login between machines
3)finally use sshfs to mount partition.
