    i would reboot my computer into knoppix to find this out for myself, but it's been up for so long it would be a shame....

    but anyways, try this
    Code:
    $ su
    # passwd
    to setup a root password. chances are it won't work, and if it does work it'll do no good really. i mean, once you reboot it's gone, unless you're saving all your settings to hdd, floppy, or something.

    are you trying to be root? because if you are, a simple su without actually entering a password will get you there. again, i don't really see the point of setting up a realy root account unless your computer is going to be up for more than 24 hours or if you save all the settings or if you are scared of messing up the contents of your hard drive accidentally (though i believe as regular user on the live cd you can read/write data on the hard drive ).

    The knoppix website tells you
    Code:
    sudo su -
    passwd
