i'm halfway through a linux course (funded my work ), and i've done the beginners course and now on the advanced.

occasionally the course pops up questions (just for fun) and one was about how does the kernel recognise device files.

the answer was by their major and minor numbers but didn't really explain it to me.

so what are major and minor numbers...?
