So far, i've installed the mplayer that came with my distro, it says that i can play a lot of file types including avi files. Am i lost here or am i going in the right direction?

Yes, you are going in the right direction
Other programs that are worth checking are: kaffeine, xine, aviplay and many more that I haven't tried out yet.

Or Totem plays .avi's and it comes with Gnome or there is Kaboodle for KDE.

mplayer is an excellent media player, but it is nothing without codecs. Many avi's are encoded as xvid, so you need to make sure to have xvid and xvidcore installed, and if you are installing mplayer from source, you must have the devel packages as well
