I have a keybored and above the standard keys are extra keys, such as skip, home, my comp etc
is tehre anything to maKE them work

Yes check out linEAK, I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it looks good. There is also a program called Hotkeys.

I've just installed linEAK, and have used klineakconfig to configure it, and I now have many of the extra buttons working.
I had to add my keyboard to the /etc/lineakkb.def since it wasn't already on the list, and use the xev in the terminal to find out what signal the butons were giving.
