SMP is not living up to my expectations :(
So after some problems I finally got my SMP server running on Debian Linux (never did get slack working). Any way, the server recognizes all 4 CPUs, and shows them in the /proc/cpuinfo file. So that works as it should. So to do a little test what I did is setup a bit of a race between my old server and my new server. I started a make on a both servers at the same time. The compile was of centericq. This is about a 15minut build. I started it at the same time on both servers and my new 4 CPU SMP server only came in about 2 mints faster. this is really disappointing. Here is the hardware comparison:
New SMP Server:
4X PII 450MHz CPUs
1000 MB RAM
10,000RPM SCSI HD
1X PII 450MHz CPU
IDE 5,400RPM HD
So as you can see there is a huge difference! What am I doing wrong. I am sure that I would not get the 4X speed because of the SMP Overhead, but still, I should get at least 3 times increase in speed, shouldn't I?
