    Linux speed

Hi, Ive been using Linux Fedora for a few months now and Im getting annoyed with how slow it is. Can anyone recomend the fastest distro for my computer, with a PIII 450mhz processor. Also, what is my arch (ie i686)? I know i686 is ment to be better than i386 for my processor but is there an even better one?

I heard of Arch Linux, is it any gud?

Im a fan of the gui but not afraid of command promt, so please bear in mind with recomendations.

Yeah, i686 is at least pentium3+pentium4 and maybe others to.

If you try gentoo, everything will be optimized for your hardware, whatever that is, and distrowatch sais vidalinux too is i686-based.

    Haansoft Linux is a fedora-based i686-distro.

    i686-distros token from distrowatch:
    VidaLinux (Gnome-compiled Gentoo)
    ArchLinux
    Yoper
Buffalo Linux (Based on Slackware and Vectorlinux)
    CCux Linux
    Haansoft Linux (based on fedora)
    Munjoy Linux
    PLD Linux Distribution (Available for i386, i586 + i686)
    Octoz GNU/Linux
    Foresight Linux (Based on Spesifix)

I have tried Vidalinux and found it to be good (there were a couple of small things that needed to be fixed though). I hear Yoper is also really good.

As for architecture, what processor model is yours? P3, P4, AMD...

    Hope that helps,

Pentium and some or all PIIs are i586.

Slackware is considered pretty fast by a lot of users here and it's a major, popular distro. In my limited work with it, I feel that it's more newbie-friendly than Gentoo.

Want a disto that rocks on an older PC? Try Vector Linux. I'm running it on an old PIII 450 with 192 MB of ram and it rocks. (Hint. Scrap KDE in favor of IceWM for really good response). SOHO 5.0.1 is based on Slackware 10.1.

Well, i586=Pentium, Pentium II and i686=Pentium 3, so i686 should be more powerful. But note that only some functions rely on the more advanced processors, so if you look at source code listings, you'll see lots of files for i386. Unless there is a corresponding i586 or i686, the i386 files will be the right ones for all ix86 machines.

I'm running SOHO 5.0.1. Give it a shot. Works great on mine.

With gentoo, I mean everything is optimized for your system. If you don't have a DVD-station, disable dvd in /etc/make.conf, and no installed apps will have support for DVD, as long as it ain't mandory. Everything is also compiled for your prosessor, both the kernel and the overlying apps.
