have you tried CTRL+ALT+F4 ?

it should prompt for a login once it starts up, x or not...

couldn't he possibly also edit the /etc/xinitrc file to change the run level from 5 to 3? then reboot. that way instead of automatically going into the Logon GUI .. then it will just stay in text mode.

yes, he could, but I don't see ho whe's going to edit it if he can't login...hmm...

i didn't think the problem was that he can't login, i was under the thought that he just wanted to be able to boot into text mode when he booted up, since of course RH9 always boot into the GUI for the most part.

Thanks all, sorted now.
Open up a terminal window and type 'init 3' then return.
And me nvidia drivers are in!
(starting to warm to Red Hat again)
