is it actually compiling the driver(s)??..Code:emerge emu10k1
and what does 'emerge' exactly mean?

Emerge takes the packages from the portage tree and compiles and installs them, so basically emerge means install. I heard that emu10k1 takes a long time, you're the second person I've read that has emerged it. Although I'm not sure why, I have a Creative SB Live soundcard and I didn't have to emerge emu10k1, I just added support for it into the kernel.
