hi,
i am wondering if someone could give me some information on downloading files as i have tried to download but am asked to locate a file to open with and as i am new to linux i dont really have a clue. i suspect it is somethinng to do that it source (src.rpm). and i need to compile in some way but i would appreciate if someone could send me in the right direction.

If you want to compile a program from source, then you should download the tarball (.tar.gz or .tar.bz2), not the .src.rpm.
