A bootable Linux? I'm under the impression that all versions of Linux can be booted. Are you referring to anything in particular?

KNOPPIX is the business! Its a bootable CD-ROM available at www.knoppix.org. I haven't yet seen it fail to recognise and configure a single piece of hardware. If you try it out, you'll find that it boots straight into KDE as an ordinary user. If you try to su to root, you'll be asked for the password but what is it? Just press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<F2> to go to the 2nd virtual terminal and you'll find yourself already logged in as root.
