do ati drivers have 3d acceleration?

they do if set up properly and, even then, they aren't that great. you'll probably still receive fairly poor gaming performance...much better than without 3d acceleration but not as good as it could/should be
for example, doom III ran fairly well in windows on my computer with a radeon 9700 pro with moderate settings...running it in linux (with a radeon 9800 pro...my brother's card, but he upgraded and so did i
) i had to run at the lowest settings for it to be playable (not even great, just playable).
ati drivers for linux are just lacking severely...though they do exist
EDIT: i upgraded to the 9800 pro after trying doom III with the radeon 9700 pro...same results

i just releaized that i wasn't that specific
i meant the ati proprietary drivers without installing fglrx, just the proprietary drivers
