I think it would run fluxbox, the oldest I've tested fluxbox on was a pentium2, but it ran smooth there. If you run dsl, you would as well use the "kdrive" xserver, which is more lightweight than xorg. I would seriously give dsl a try... If fluxbox not good enough, you can use twm or fvwm or something.
