Internet uptime - how do i find this out

Guys, how do i find out what my internet uptime is. So it says say 3 hours, if i get disconnected then it goes back to 0. How do i find this out?

I know that gkrellm can do it, but i cant get this wokring for some reason, can someone give me a step-by-step guide.

If you could also specify the file where this is held, it would be useful as well. I just want a text figure of how long its been disconnected without failure.

    Thanks for your help

All I did was enable it in Gkrellm and click the little button that showed up to start the timer.
