Screensaver thingy.....
hey how do i shut off the thing where after a given amount of time...the screen shuts off when idle? its not a X option because it did it even before i had X installed....i run Arch Linux...and dont know where to edit this.....thanks...

That would be the power management option for your monitor, nothing to do with a screensaver.
I'm not sure where you would look for this in your distro, but search for something about power management and tell it to leave your monitor always on.\"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.\"

In X, try running "xset -dpms" and see if that helps. While running X, it might very well be an X-specific thing. Both the text-mode console and X implements monitor power-saving, so it may well be that you're experiencing the two different implementations as one symptom.
