    Laptop in France

This has little to do with Linux but I noticed several folks here are from the UK. My daughter is going to France for school and I got her the international plug kit for her laptop but I was wondering if any extra precautions should be taken as the UK adapter seems to have no third prong connections for the ground. This is a Gateway 450x with 110-240 volts on both the surge protector and changer.

    Thanks

I think that just makes it more likly that she will get fried if the wireing in the plug is faulty as it is not earthed in france (i think that is correct - feel free to correct me) but many brittish appliances are not earthed either they just have double insulated power cables and the third prong is not wired to anything anyway (open up some lamp plug - they usualy are not earthd). check the power supply unit/adaptor to see if it has a small symbol that looks like a big square with a smaller square inside it.. if so then it is double insulated and your laptop and daughter should be fine :) (i think ;))

Thanks for the info. My power supply has several insignias on the back. Most are alphabetic characters except for two of them. One is a triangle with a exclamation mark and the other a house with a arrow into it's base. Unfortunately I have no square inside a square.

i guess taht means it uses the earth pin.. so in france it will be un-earthed.. i expect it will not do too much harm if only for the duration of a holiday.. but maby you could buy a surge protector that the laptop plugs into that then plugs into the wall (or uk adapter.. ) tbh im just guessing but it all seems likely to me.
