Modprobe loading wrong modules
HI.
My mailserve runs SuSe 8.0 and has been stable for the last 2 years. Recently I had to reboot and noticed it takes a long time. Closer investigation showed that modprobe tries to load a whole lot of modules which are not required eg for ATAPI tape drive.
The system boots eventually but it takes about 6-7 mins to try and load all those modules?!?!?!
Here is a snip from the log:

is there anything new in your /etc/modules file?

Use Suse 10.1 and occasionally play with Kubuntu
Also have Windows 98SE and BeOS
