Is this a problem?

Ok, so I leave my computer on for most of the day and usually shut it off right before I go to bed. Well when I'm using linux just before shut down, I noticed that it doesn't turn all the way off. It still says power off or whatever, but everything is still on except for maybe the hard disks. Now, even though it's kind of annoying to hold the power button for 7 seconds, I really want to know just one thing: Is this a problem?

If it is a problem, then maybe you could throw some answers at me. Oh and by the way; I have had this problem ever since I first installed debian. I am having the problem again now after reformatting.

Sounds like your motherboard isn't recognizing the ATX command to shut off. You could poke through your BIOS to see if there's a setting that needs to be flipped. Or it may be that Linux needs a particular ACPI option enabled.

Sorry, it's not much of an answer, but should give you some preliminary things to check out.

try issuing command as root

shutdown -P now

this command turn's off power after shutting down your system.

If this doesn't work properly their may be problem with your Motherboard

oh, well for some reason, right after your post came up and I tried shutting down normally It worked. You must be like a magic linux wizard or something. It's been shutting down clean for about a day now.
