Audio Prob on Linux

I'm running yellow dog Linux on an Apple iMac (second edition I think).
For some reason the sound is not working.
I ran the auto soundcard detection and it finds the onboard sound (an apple one) but when it plays a test sound I can't hear it.
This is odd as it did this during installation and I heard the test sound then, it has just stopped working for no reason. Anyone have a solution for this?

Oh and while I'm on the subject, is there anything that can be used to sync an iPod with linux. (i.e. iTunes equiv. for Linux)

Have you tried running alsaconf and configuring the card that way?

What is alsaconf and how do I obtain/use it?

In a terminal, do the following (as root: type su):

alsaconf
alsamixer
alsactl store

alsaconf is a program that will help you configure your sound card (supposing it is recognized). alsamixer is a mixer that you can use to change the volume settings. alsactl store will store your settings so that your volume/soundcard configuration will remain.
