Make New Linux Distro

I was wondering about making a new distro of linux or for linux. I was wondering what you would need. Such as the linux kernel, I would also like to make a new desktop something different then KDE or Gnome. I don't what I would call it yet however.

If you're looking for basic package requirements goto http://www.linuxfromscratch.org, that also explains how to build it, although I don't recommend following it too closely... 8)

If you want to focus on the desktop experience, I suggest starting with a more techie distro for a base, like Arch, Gentoo, or Debian. That way you have package management and a good deal of the init system already taken care of. Plus you have a repository to work with, though I'd probably suggest building your own, likely incompatible, specialized set of packages like Ubuntu is moving towards.

But honestly, if you aren't sure what your goals are, is this really something that needs to be done?

Well I guess it isn't neccasiry, but none of linux distros out there seem to suit my needs. besides I have only tried one acutally.

why is that a bad idea?

If someone only has an idea to make some kind of Linux distro I do not think it will add something to the enormous list of distributions already out there. Better save time and energy for something more usefull. :)

but then there will be no new distributions available. we'd be stuck with what's out there now. and just cos he's fed up with other distros doesn't mean he's gonna market it for anybody but himself.

Exactly. I've thought about trying to create a distro using LFS just for learning, but then I looked at it and came to my senses. I'll need at least a summer to take on a project like that.

if you dont want to use Gnome or KDE, my suggestions are XFCE or IceWM
