Hello guys!
I noticed that scratches have started to appear on my DVDs and I want to save them in my HD for back-up.
May I please request for help regarding this concern? I have tried to rip VCDs and CDs but have not yet experienced ripping DVDs. I preferably would like to learn how to rip DVDs on either fedora 10, Mint 7 and/or Debian Lenny.

There are a lot of options available for DVD Ripping. AcidRip and dvd::rip are available in Ubuntu Sources. Both work fine but I haven't used any of those recently.
Handbrake is really good performer and I used it a few times only. You should give it a try. Its not available in sources though and you have to install in manually. .rpm and .deb packages are available in its download section.

I use dvdbackup, but you have to make sure that the dvdcss libraries are installed first, since they are needed to "crack" the drm found on most commercial DVD's. In any case, I use this tool all the time to rip DVDs to ISO files that I store on my NAS arrays. That way, I can always make a copy if the original gets munged.

You have downloaded the source code. You should first try to install it with your package manger. On my CentOS/RHEL system (or Fedora) I go to the command line and run "yum install dvdbackup". What distribution+version of Linux are you running. You should only install from source if your system doesn't have the package available in the package manager tools. Ubuntu uses Synaptic (gui) or apt-get. All debian derivatives use apt-get or install from *.deb packages. Red Hat derivatives use yum, or install with rpm from *.rpm package files.
Search/download missing Libraries from here and install manually.
I am using Fedora 10. I also have checked the packages and dvdbackup is not included. SO As previously posted, I have untared the file ans is now in my home folders.Quote:

I forgot that I downloaded and installed the rpm directly because dvdbackup wasn't in any of the usual repositories... Doh! Anyway, I think the latest package (not an RPM) is on sourceforge.net: dvdbackup | Get dvdbackup at SourceForge.net
Also, Dag Wieers' site has older (but usable) versions in RHEL/CentOS rpm format: DAG: dvdbackup RPM packages for Red Hat, CentOS and Fedora
