partitoning this drive

hi all

i went out and bought myself an 80gb hdd. but i cant decide how to partition it.

what i want is to have:
- a windows partiton for itself and program files (not many)
- a fairly large partition for my stuff (music, spare linux source files)
- a boot partition
- a swap partition
and lastly 2 linux partitions for 2 distros (namely gentoo and either fc4, suse or another)

so i have the partitons i need listed. i know i will need to have 32mb for the /boot partition and 256/512mb for my swap partition, but what about the others?

feedback would be greatly appreciated

How about "approximations" something like this?

15GB - windows partiton for itself and program files (not many)
40GB - fairly large partition for your stuff (music, spare linux source files)
32MB - boot partition
512MB - swap partition
12GB - linux partition for 1 distro
12GB - linux partition for 1 distro

You'll might want to ramp up Gentoo's slice over FC or SuSE, as it does tend to both eat up and use (due to compiling needs, distfile storage, etc.) more space than a typical binary package Linux distribution. I would suggest about a 35% increase over what you would commonly find necessary in another distro. This and other important subjects are found throughout the Gentoo installation handbook.

thanks for that! 12gb for each sounds excellent (since the largest hdd i have installed linux on was 8gb.

thats what i was worried about. ok, so using the table above, i have 24gb to seperate into 2 partitions.

should it be something like 8/12 or something like that?

Yeah, St. Joe is correct about Gentoo needing more space than some distros. I'm surprised by how much space even the mimimal base-install consumes every time I install it.

If you have 24GB left, how about 10/14?

oops! i forgot that it was 24gb not 20!:oops:

how much space does gentoo take up just doing the base-install?

and then how much does it take up with lets say X.org with kde?
