Redhat 8.0 and New Kernel

Can anybody explain to me how to put Kernel 2.4.20 as well as XFree86 4.3.0 on Redhat 8.0. I am complete newbie to linux but want to learn and can not see to find any documentation on this. Also is it hard to compile the kernel. I am well aware of all the hardware I have in my pc so that will help. This is a new install of redhat with all packages installed. I just wanna be up to date on the kernel as well as xfree and gnome.

Asus A7N8XDeluxe
2 3200 Samsung DDR
2 Seagate 60 Gig Hard Drives on ATA Raid(Windows Installation)
1 Western Digitial 80 Gig Special Edition Hard Drive(Linux Installation)
TX2000 Promise Controller
ATI Radeon Pro 97000
1 Pioneer DVD-R 105
1 Panasonic 105 DVD Ram Drive
1 Zip IDE 100 meg
Using onboard sound as well as 3com Nic and Nvidia Nic.

To compile the kernel, see the Kernel-HOWTO on tldp.org. To install XF86 4.3, download the tar ball, unpack it, run "make world" and then "make install", and that should be all.

and to run the newest GNOME download garnome from http://gnome.org/~jdub/garnome (read the mailing list too, there are a good number of problems when installed from source like this.)
