What software do I need for the following:
Computer with win98 on lan
Linux box on lan
computer with win98 at home w/ modem connection to internet
I want to remote control the win98 lan machine from the win98 home machine through the linux box (as server)
Is the Linux box acting as a firewall?
If not, just use VNC on both 98 boxes.
vnc (back when I tried it) didn't provide for remote printing?
someone a long time ago tried to sell me a linux based remote login service but I don't know what the software was.
How do you mean that VNC doesn't provide for remote printing? When you're connected to your VNC server, applications run on the server, which means that if you print something in an application that you're controlling through VNC, it will print on the VNC server. Isn't that what you wanted?

No, VNC (or any other remote control software) has anything with printing to do. All remote control softwares that I know of mainly just transfer mouse and keyboard events to the other side and receive graphic info. That also means that sound will be played on the other end.
That's simply because the programs actually _run_ on your office computer, and so they are forced to use the printer drivers on the office computer. If anything, you could set up a printer driver to connect to your home printer via SMB, if you have shared it. That assumes that there are no firewalls in the way, though.

I know that, there just isn't any easy way to do that (at least not that I'm aware of), except for using it over SMB.
pcanywhere will do it but I don't want that.
I can set up printers on both ends and pcanywhere will print to either office or home.
tell me more about smb though....
