DHCP

Hello,

I am using Mandrake 9.2 and am trying to figure the following:

1) Where in the startup process, ie in what script, is DHCP called to get the ip address etc.

2) Can I modify what data DHCP gets from the DHCP server on the client machine? If so how?

3) Where is the DHCP data stored? Is it in a file (where?) or in environmental variables (which ones?).

As far as the process that gets your DHCP info, you can check your rc-scripts for the one that brings up (should be /etc/rc.d/net or something like that).

Why would you want to modify your DHCP info? And what do you want to modify? You can just set your rc script to set your network card's settings as per what you want.

The DHCP data is stored in /etc/dhcpcd/

Hello,

I have a cable modem and by default, the host name is set to x1-6- the mac address of the nic. I would like to set it up so that I can assign something else to the host name. I thought that maybe the solution was to change the information that DHCP asks for.

You set your own host name via the /etc/hostname file. DHCP cannot override this, IIRC.
