Can't ping beyond router

Hi,

This is my first post - apologies if this has been covered before.

I'm trying to set up a web-based intranet at the organisation that I'm working for using eGroupWare running on Mandrake 10. This works fine when assigned a private IP address on the local network. However, when I assign the machine one of our public IP numbers, I can ping everything on the local network, but I can't ping beyond the router.

A first search of troubleshooting guides suggested that my DNS server addresses weren't configured correctly. This wasn't the case, as I can't ping external IP addresses either.

The two configurations are as follows:

LAN

Mandrake eGroupware server 10.0.0.59
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway (Mac XServer) 10.0.0.1
Primary DNS 212.50.160.100
Secondary DNS 213.249.130.100

Public

Mandrake eGroupware server 213.249.128.236
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway (CISCO Router) 213.249.128.233
DNS servers as above.

This has really got me stumped.

Has your router been configured to route traffic to and from that ip address or is it set to drop traffic from unknown hosts?

I'm not sure, but before the hd broke the machine that I am configuring was being used successfully as a debian-based quicktime streaming server using that IP address through the router.

Do you know how I might go about checking the configuration of the router?

If you are using a Cisco router and don't know how to configure it, you're in a world of hurt. Find a CCNA. Or better yet: have your boss put you through a CCNA course.
