simply using a modem

Hi

I'm an absolute newbie to linux but i installed it as dual boot o/s and thought i could adjust to it. However i have no clue how to get my modem to work. i have done a bit of research and i know its a hardware modem not a software as i know theres a stei providing drivers for winmodems.

So i'm certain its a hardware modem but how do i get it to work, it isn't detected or anything?
